A private event. A performer behind a shop window waits for the guests to announce their wishes. A menu reveals tempting performances created from different ingredients in terms of content and form. Who places an order? Which descriptions are you tempted by? Why do you hesitate?
In the interactive setting of SMILE AND BE QUIET, Karin Rose examines the complex relationship between control and power. Who controls whom? Which associations are at odds? Which expectations are undermined? The physical performance explores the potential of hybridity to question entrenched identity constructs based on stereotypes through the lens of a post-colonial practice. At the heart of the artistic creation is the alternative narrative of a woman of Southeast Asian origin in a Central European society.
The evening culminates in the moment when the performer leaves the shop window, joins the audience and starts a conversation with an unknown outcome.
